Wikipedia Extension Demo

To demonstrate our semantic discovery technology (Semantic Signatures®), we have created a Wikipedia extension that matches on Wikipedia itself! A simple copy and paste will get you a front row seat to the world's first semantic discovery API.

What is the purpose of the Wikipedia Extension?

The purpose of this extension is to provide a Wikipedia reader with a short, organized list of other articles in Wikipedia that are highly relevant to the current article being browsed. The matches are generated by understanding the meaning of the articles and by matching their Semantic Signatures®. Since keywords are not used, the user is provided a much deeper and enriched look into Wikipedia to find other articles related to what you're currently reading.

What will I see?

Here is a screen shot of the demo in action. Once the application is installed, this is what is returned, right on the page, by the SemanticHacker API for the Wikipedia article for Fusion Rocket.

The first significant point about this list of articles is that many of them are not referenced anywhere in the main article. For instance, "Robert Bussard" is a physicist that proposed the idea of a type of fusion rocket using a 'Ramjet'-like concept. His work is clearly highly relevant to the article, and someone interested in a fusion rocket would likely be interested in the life and work of Robert Bussard. Semantic Signatures® was able to understand the meaning of the page and correctly link him to the article.

Clicking on a category (e.g. Science/Physics/Nuclear/Fusion) presents links to articles relevant to the current article. Clicking on any link within the results will open the article, and a new set of articles that are related to the open article are presented.

How can I install the Wikipedia extension?

The Wikipedia extension is a script that calls the TextWise Wikipedia application to insert related Wikipedia articles into the article being viewed.
IMPORTANT: You must use the default MonoBook skin to properly display results. This can be found under Preferences > Skin once you have logged in.

STEP 1:

Create or login to your Wikipedia account. If you don't have one, make one. Then login.

STEP 2:

The script only works for Wikipedia's Monobook skin (default skin) so you may want to verify the skin you are using in your preferences.

STEP 3:

Enter the following URL into your browser. IMPORTANT: Replace "YourUserName" with your chosen Wikipedia username that you selected when you set up your Wikipedia account. NOTE - your chosen Wikipedia username is case sensitive.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:YourUserName/monobook.js

STEP 4:

Click the "edit this page" tab at the top of the Wikipedia page. Copy and paste the JavaScript text below into the top or bottom of the text area:

document.write('<scr'+'ipt src='+
'"http://api.semantichacker.com/wp/js/ui.js"'+
' type="text/javascript">'+
'</scr'+'ipt>');

Then click the Save Page button at the bottom of the page.

STEP 5:

After saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes. For Internet Explorer: press Ctrl-F5, Mozilla/Firefox: hold down Shift while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R), Opera/Konqueror: press F5, Safari: press Cmd-Opt-E.

Congrats, you're in! You will now experience the power of Semantic Signatures®.

How can I uninstall the extension?

STEP 1:

Copy and paste this link into your browser: (replacing "YourUserName" with your Wikipedia username) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:YourUserName/monobook.js

STEP 2:

Click the "edit this page" tab at the top of the Wikipedia page and delete the entire text:

document.write('<scr'+'ipt src='+
'"http://api.semantichacker.com/wp/js/ui.js"'+
' type="text/javascript">'+
'</scr'+'ipt>');

Then click the “Save Page” button at the bottom of the page and the application is uninstalled.

Note: After saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes (extension is removed). For Internet Explorer: press Ctrl-F5, Mozilla/Firefox: hold down Shift while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R), Opera/Konqueror: press F5, Safari: press Cmd-Opt-E.
